Sustainability

Planet

We're working hard to tackle the impact of our operations on the environment.

We build environmental factors into investment decisions, like our new fulfilment centre, Skygate, in the East Midlands. Skygate has been certified as A-rated for energy efficiency by an independent third party.

Our target is to be carbon-neutral in our own operations by 2025, and across our value chain by 2035. That's why we’ve switched to renewably sourced energy for all of our UK operations, reducing our carbon footprint by 40%.

We are also working with environmental reporting expert Carbon Intelligence to map and analyse our total carbon footprint, before setting further science-based carbon reduction targets. And we have implemented a new system, Greenstone, to record our carbon-emissions data so we can monitor progress towards our targets.

We have committed to the Science Based Target initiative (SBTi) to become net zero in greenhouse gas emissions by 2040. These targets are currently being verified by SBTi. Our submission includes our emissions from all scopes and categories in our baseline year of financial year 2021. The submission also comprises our near- and long-term targets, and our commitment to submit our forest, land and aggriculture (FLAG) emissions by December 2024. Our near-term focus will be within scope 1, scope 2, and specific scope 3 categories, such as purchased goods and services, capital goods, and upstream and downstream logistics.

Our planet targets

2025

Carbon neutral for Scope 1 and 2 by June 2025

2023

Set science-based targets for Scope 1, 2 and 3 by June 2023

2023

Our planet progress

  • Switched to renewable gas across our own operations
  • Commissioned a report to provide a baseline position of our carbon footprint for Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions, which will allow us to set science-based targets to align to net zero
  • 40% reduction of our own operations’ carbon footprint (Scope 1 and 2) since FY19 by using renewable energy at all sitesBegan the process of mapping our full Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions, as part of our work to set science-based targets

We move all containers to Skygate, our new fulfilment centre, via rail as opposed to road.

We were one of the first 62 retailers to commit to the British Retail Consortium’s Roadmap to Net Zero.

Did you know

Having introduced a permanent hybrid working model, we will significantly reduce colleague travel to and from our sites over the coming years.

We have downsized our UK estate, exiting older, inefficient buildings, helping to reduce our carbon footprint.
